Study Grants
Scholarships for Medical Students from Rural Areas:
APPLICATIONS ROUND HAS CLOSED
Applications are now open for the Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarships (RAMUS) Scheme, funded by the Australian Government and designed to encourage medical students with a rural background to pursue a medical career in rural, regional or remote Australia.
Successful applicants will receive un-bonded scholarships worth $10,000 a year while completing a standard medical degree at their chosen university. The RAMUS Scheme is open to medical students from rural and remote areas, with demonstrated financial need being one of the criteria for ranking those who apply.
“The RAMUS Scheme supports a total of 550 ongoing scholarships and up to 120 new scholarship places are available in 2010. Applications must be submitted by 5pm on 18 January 2009,” said RAMUS Manager, Susan Magnay.
The RAMUS Scheme’s support helps successful applicants overcome financial barriers to study, such as the cost of living away from home or moving away from family support structures. Under its mentorship program, RAMUS scholars are paired with experienced rural medical practitioners.
Since it began in 2000 more than 1,500 RAMUS scholarships have been awarded with more than 870 recipients having already graduated in medicine.
To access an online application form, or find further details about the RAMUS Scheme, prospective applicants should visit the National Rural Health Alliance website at www.ruralhealth.org.au

Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship [RAHUS] Scheme
The Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship [RAHUS] Scheme is one component of the suite of long term initiatives by the Australian Government to increase the number of health professionals in rural and remote areas of Australia. The Scheme is specifically aimed at addressing the shortage of allied and oral health professionals in these areas.
Following their graduation, scholarship holders will be fully qualified and able to commence clinical practice. The goal of the Scheme is to increase the number of students who grew up in rural and remote areas of Australia, who enter and complete allied health or oral health undergraduate or graduate entry tertiary studies.
Scholarship holders will receive $10,000 each year during their entry level allied health or oral health professional studies. These funds assist scholars to cover the costs of moving from their homes and support structure in the country and settling to university study and living in the city.
The scholarships are not bonded. Rather, the ties to rural and remote areas of Australia are reinforced through a rural mentorship scheme as well as through membership of their university’s student rural health club or nearest affiliated rural health club.
Applications for 2009 scholarships opened on 28 July 2008 and will close on 29 September 2008.
The RAHUS Scheme is managed by Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH), in partnership with the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA).
Please note: the new undergraduate Dentistry courses at James Cook University and Charles Sturt University and the Bachelor of Oral Health Course at Charles Sturt University commencing in 2009 are eligible courses for 2009.
