Dental Board of Australia - Botox and Bleaching

Tuesday, December 14, 2010
The Dental Board of Australia has issued two new interim policies.

The first deals with the use of Botulism Toxin (Botox).  The Policy supports the use of Botox by registered dentists with education training and competence for the treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder/Dysfunction.

The second interim policy deals with teeth whitening/bleaching. The Policy states that teeth whitening/bleaching is an irreversible procedure on the human teeth.

It states  tooth whitening/bleaching products containing more than 6% concentration of the active whitening/bleaching agent should only be used by a registered dental practitioner, with education training in competence in teeth whitening/bleaching.

In respect of both issues covered in these interim policies, the Board has advised that it will continue to examine these issues further and has issued these policies as an interim measure.
