REVIEW

The Australian Dental Journal – the first 50 years: a short history and commentary
The first dental journal in Australia was published in 1897 in Victoria and was titled the Australian Journal of Dentistry. New South Wales soon followed suit with the publication of several dental journals which eventually amalgamated into the Dental Journal of Australia. Later still, Queensland published its own journal under the title of The Australian Dental Mirror and, subsequently, the Queensland Dental Journal.

ADRF RESEARCH REPORT

Longitudinal comparison of factors influencing choice of dental treatment by private general practitioners
Service rate variations and appropriateness of care issues have focused attention on factors that influence treatment decisions. The aims of this study were to examine what factors dentists consider in choosing alternative treatments, the stability of these factors over time and whether stability of treatment choice was related to age of dentist.

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES

Caries experience in preschool children referred for specialist dental care in hospital
Increasing numbers of preschool children are being referred for specialist dental management in a paediatric hospital. Most cases have severe early childhood caries and require comprehensive management under general anaesthesia. The present study investigated risk factors for disease presence at initial consultation.

Risk factors for dental caries in the five-year-old South Australian population
This study tested the hypothesis that risk behaviours in disadvantaged groups would explain socio-economic inequality in dental caries prevalence among preschool children.

The ability of thiourea to scavenge hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals during the intra-coronal bleaching of bloodstained root-filled teeth
The aims of the present in vitro study are to quantify the diffusion of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals to the outer root surface following intra-coronal bleaching, and to evaluate the ability of thiourea incorporated into the bleaching protocol to scavenge residual hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals.

The effects of file size, sodium hypochlorite and blood on the accuracy of Root ZX apex locator in enlarged root canals: an in vitro study
The initial electronic apex locator (EAL) length measurement is generally established with a small-sized file. It is not known whether file size would be interfering with the reading accuracy of the EAL. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of file size on the accuracy of Root ZX apex locator using an agar model when sodium hypochlorite solution or blood was present during electronic measurements in enlarged root canals.

Prevalence of percutaneous exposure incidents amongst dentists in Queensland
Percutaneous exposure incidents (PEI) represent an important occupational health issue in dentistry, and one that can incur severe consequences from blood-borne infections. Given the importance of this topic, we considered it necessary to investigate the distribution and cause of PEI among Queensland dentists.

Resin adhesion to caries-affected dentine after different removal methods
Caries-affected dentine is the common bonding substrate when treating a patient. At present, there are many methods used for caries removal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength of two adhesives (Clearfil Protect Bond and OptiBond Solo Plus Total-Etch) to caries-affected dentine after three different caries removal methods.

The pH change after HCl titration into resting and stimulated saliva for a buffering capacity test
Saliva collection can provide clinical information about individual patients. However, a correlation between ranking buffering capacity using resting and stimulated saliva is still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pH change after HCl titration into resting and stimulated saliva for a salivary buffering capacity test.

Bond strengths between composite resin and auto cure glass ionomer cement using the co-cure technique
The clinical technique for sandwich restorations prescribes etching initially set auto cure glass ionomer cement (GIC) prior to placing a layer of resin bond to develop a weak mechanical bond between composite resin and GIC. Co-curing a resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bond and composite resin to GIC may create a chemical bond and improve the bond strengths between these two materials.

Detectability of experimental peri-implant cancellous bone lesions using conventional and direct digital radiography
The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance obtained from direct digital radiographic images (in their original form and after applying a grey-scale inversion) and conventional film in the detection of artificial periimplant cancellous bone lesions.

CLINICAL REPORT

The mandibular ramus donor site
With the increased awareness of the population about dental implants, more patients are presenting after losing a number of teeth and requesting fixed solutions to their dilemmas. Often they have lost width of alveolus which does not allow implant placement without its augmentation. The mandibular ramus is one intra-oral site that can supply excellent quality and often quantity of autologous bone for use in augmenting alveolar ridge deficiencies. This article describes the general surgical principles in harvesting the mandibular ramus.

DATA WATCH

Australian dentist labour force 2003
This report presents results from the 2003 dentist labour force data collection and makes comparisons with data from previously published collections, 1994 and 2000. This report aims to identify labour force trends between 2000 and 2003, and examines the impact of those trends on the supply of dentist visits in Australia.

THE USE OF FLUORIDES IN AUSTRALIA: GUIDELINES

The use of fluorides in Australia: guidelines
ARCPOH hosted the workshop at the request of the National Advisory Committee on Oral Health (NACOH) which had considered the need for Australia to update its guidelines on the use of fluorides as part of promoting the oral health of the population in Australia’s National Oral Health Plan 2004–2013 (AHMC, 2004).
