September 2004 - Volume 49 Number 3REVIEWAdhesive restorative materials: A review ‘Adhesive’ restorative dentistry originated with the work of Buonocore in 1955 in bonding resin to etched enamel. Since then, adhesive materials and techniques have developed at a rapid rate. The first chemically adhesive material (zinc polycarboxylate cement) was marketed in the late 1960s, and glass ionomer cements and dentine bonding agents have since become available. This review focuses on the latter two products.

| H Koh PG Robinson | Penicillins for the prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis in dentistry Many dental procedures cause bacteraemia and it is believed that this may lead to bacterial endocarditis (BE) in a few people. Guidelines in many countries recommend that prior to invasive dental procedures antibiotics are administered to people at high risk of endocarditis. However, it is unclear whether the potential risks of this prophylaxis outweigh the potential benefits.
