Specific orofacial problems experienced by musicians
Patients who play musical instruments (especially wind and stringed instruments) and vocalists are prone to particular types of orofacial problems. Some problems are caused by playing and some are the result of dental treatment. This paper proposes to give an insight into these problems and practical guidance to general practice dentists.

A comparison of stainless steel hand and rotary nickel-titanium instrumentation using a silicone impression technique
Root canal preparation using rotary nickel-titanium instruments has been reported to be superior to hand instrumentation in terms of root canal shape, centring and frequency of procedural errors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate canal preparations using a sequential silicone impression technique to assess root canal morphology.

Comparison of five selective media for the growth and enumeration of Streptococcus mutans
Although a few growth media are available for selective isolation of the cariogenic bacteria, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), it is still unclear as to which is the most efficacious. This study compared the selectivity and sensitivity of five different media for growing a laboratory strain of S. mutans (NCTC 10449), and for enumerating S. mutans from teeth of a group of young children, aged 2-10 years.

A comparison of Kodak Ultraspeed and Ektaspeed Plus dental X-ray films for the detection of dental caries
Using the fastest dental X-ray film available is an easy way of reducing exposure to ionizing radiation. However, the diagnostic ability of fast films for the detection of proximal surface caries must be demonstrated before these films will become universally accepted.

Tooth wear in children with Down syndrome
Several studies have described the impact that dental caries and periodontitis may have on the dentitions of individuals with Down syndrome, but there are few reports about the effects of tooth wear. This investigation aimed to compare the aetiology, prevalence and severity of tooth wear in 49 cytogenetically confirmed Down syndrome children with 49 non-Down syndrome controls.

Intra-muscular ketorolac administered as a supplemental analgesic for removal of impacted third molar teeth: A prospective study
Post-operative pain follows dentalveolar oral surgery. Ketorolac is a potent nonsteroidal analgesic with moderate anti-inflammatory effects. The purpose of this study was to test whether a single supplementary dose of ketorolac reduced post-operative pain experienced by patients having third molar teeth removed.

Chronic dental infections mimicking temporomandibular disorders
Trismus and jaw pain are not only caused by temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but also by various pathologies, namely infection, trauma, or neoplasms. TMD-like symptoms, as a result of the pathologies, may be confusing to a clinician. This paper reports two cases of chronic dental infection mimicking TMD.

Displacement of a mandibular third molar root fragment into the pterygomandibular space
Displacement of root fragments into adjacent anatomical areas is an uncommon complication of the removal of teeth. This paper describes the management of a mandibular third molar root fragment that was forced into the antero-inferior aspect of the pterygomandibular space. The importance of tomographical radiographs in the visualization of the displaced root is also discussed.
