REVIEW

Oral health promotion for our ageing Australian population
The ageing Australian population living in the new millennium has dental needs that are very different and more complex than those experienced by previous older adult cohorts during the twentieth century. A summary of the oral health status of older Australians is presented, together with a review of the important relationships between general health and oral health.

ADRF REPORTS

Edentulism and associated factors in people 60 years and over from urban, rural and remote Western Australia

Tooth wear prevention: A quantitative and qualitative in vitro study
Management of tooth wear from grinding presents a significant clinical challenge. Acrylic nightguards are often used to protect the teeth, but many patients still grind with these appliances. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of three lubricants in reducing enamel wear by using an electro-mechanical machine under controlled conditions, with a view to undertaking a subsequent longitudinal clinical study.

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES

A survey of sodium hypochlorite use by general dental practitioners and endodontists in Australia
Sodium hypochlorite is used commonly as an endodontic irrigant, but there are no published reports that provide details of its use. This survey sought to determine the percentage of Australian dentists who practiced endodontics, whether they used sodium hypochlorite for irrigation, and the manner of dilution, storage and dispensing sodium hypochlorite used by both dentists and endodontists.

The aims of this study were to investigate time trends in the provision of sub-categories of diagnostic and preventive services across a 15-year period.

Tongue cancer: Do patients younger than 40 do worse?
Debate continues as to whether being young confers a worse prognosis for patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Recent papers have provided conflicting views in this debate. In this study we aimed to investigate if young age at the time of diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue confers a worse prognosis.

Oral ulceration with bone sequestration
Oral mucosal ulceration is a common manifestation of various disease processes. Identification of the aetiological factor(s) involved greatly facilitates the management of such conditions. This report describes oral ulceration of the mucosa overlying the lingual shelf and mylohyoid ridge of the mandible and, less commonly on tori and exostoses, in association with bone sequestration.

CASE REPORT

Intra-alveolar distraction osteogenesis in preparation for dental implant placement combined with orthodontic/orthognathic surgical treatment: A case report
The use of implants has become a routine part of restorative dental treatment. The placement of implants requires a sufficient quantity of bone in which to place implant fixtures. Where such bone does not exist, a number of methods have been used to augment the affected area of the alveolar ridge. This case report describes the use of the relatively new distraction osteogenesis procedure to increase bone volume in a patient who required posttraumatic restoration of several missing teeth, as well as comprehensive orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment.
