Oral hygiene measures and promotion: Review and considerations
Current mechanical and chemotherapeutic approaches to oral hygiene aim to modify the oral microflora to promote healthy periodontal and dental tissues. Current oral hygiene measures, appropriately used and in conjunction with regular professional care, are capable of virtually preventing caries and most periodontal disease and maintaining oral health.

Dental complications of head and neck radiotherapy: Part 2
Radiotherapy for head and neck tumours is a viable treatment modality. However, a wide range of potentially debilitating dental complications may accompany the treatment. In Part 2 of this article, prevention and management strategies available to the dental practitioner to stave off the dental side effects of radiotherapy are explored and particular attention is given to the management of xerostomia and radiation caries.

ADRF REPORTS

Changes in malocclusion over 25 years
The measured values of specific traits of occlusion may be subject to significant change due to growth and maturation of the dentofacial structures. Some traits may show improvement while others may show deterioration. Rarely is there an opportunity to examine a sample of occlusions 25 years after the acquisition of the original set of records. This study examines the changes in traits of occlusion in a sample of 46 subjects who were originally examined between 1971-1973 and for whom records were again obtained in 1998.

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES

Model of root surface erosion
Most research on dental erosion has focused on erosion in enamel. However, the increasing retention of teeth into old age has increased the potential for root surface erosion. The nature and kinetics of root surface erosion have not yet been adequately explored. The purpose of this project was to develop an in vitro model of root surface erosion in order to investigate the polarised light microscopy of controlled erosion and the histology and rate of demineralisation of this process in root cementum/dentine.

Concepts for the prophylaxis of infective endocarditis in dentistry
Oral commensal microorganisms are commonly associated with the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis. Despite modern antimicrobial and surgical treatment, infective endocarditis continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality. Although dentistry is no longer considered a major risk factor for infective endocarditis, it is current standard of practice that dental procedures likely to produce significant bacteraemia in patients who are susceptible to this disease be prophylactically covered with an antimicrobial agent. The concepts of antimicrobial prophylaxis prior to invasive dental procedures are outlined in this review, with particular reference to the latest recommendations of the Australian Dental Association.
