Fluorescence properties of tooth-coloured restorative materials assessed using a fluorescence DSLR camera

Advancement in material science has led to the development of tooth-coloured filling materials, which are difficult to identify and differentiate from tooth structure. Accurate identification of the fillings is integral for routine dental records and in some forensic inspections for victim identification. UV light has been found to be useful in detection of resin filling materials based on the difference in fluorescence properties of filling materials and tooth. The fluorescence behaviour of contemporary tooth-coloured filling materials was analysed using a digital single lens reflex camera and different wavelengths of LED lights. The materials exhibited differences in their fluorescence emissions under UV light. Fluorescence–based photography appears to be a useful adjunct for identifying tooth-coloured filling materials.

Tooth coloured fillings are hard to identify using traditional clinical methods of examination. This study proposed a new diagnostic method, namely the fluorescence aided identification of restorations (FAIR) and compared this to digital imaging fiber-optic transillumination (DiFOTI – using DIAGNOcam), and to routine visual and tactile examination. The results suggested that when compared to visual examination and DiFOTI using near infrared light, the FAIR method performed better and was more reliable for identifying tooth coloured fillings.
