Prof Matteo Basso

Head of the innovative Centre of Minimal Invasive, Aesthetic and Digital Oral Rehabilitation at the University Dental Clinic of the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute of Milan, Italy, Prof. Matteo Basso is a Board Member of the Research Centre for Oral Health (CRSO) of the Milan University and  the Adjunct Professor of Dental Ergonomics and Marketing for the Graduation Course in Dentistry of the University of Milan. Matteo has given papers at numerous international conferences and promotes new concepts and approaches for prosthetics, dental caries management and tooth structures preservation.

Glassionomer cements represent very popular solutions both in preventive strategies and restorative treatments. Many different kinds of glassionomers are actually available, but those for long term restorations demonstrated the most surprising development in recent times. It’s now clinically confirmed that high viscosity glassionomer cements are able to compete with resin composites in specific clinical situations, but used technique and some shrewdness are still fundamental for clinical performance.

Participants will be able to understand which factors could influence the clinical performance of a restorative glassionomer material, while defining;
(a) the indications for their use,
(b) the chemical and mechanical properties,
(c) the right choice of material and
(d) the most indicated cavity preparation. Many tips & tricks, given by the long experience of the lecturer in preventive dentistry and Minimum Intervention field, will be also presented.

The “minimum intervention” approach, with a correct diagnosis of the clinical needs and appropriate tailored therapies, became a fundamental, undiscussed and essential part of the daily practice of dental professionals. In fact, even the most modern therapy, without a precise maintenance program, biomimetic treatments and early diagnosis of risk factors, can be easily destined to failures and, sometimes, even to verbal and legal discussions with patients. Performing a better dentistry, with minimum intervention philosophy, is now an easy and reachable target.

The most up-to-date minimally invasive and biomimetic approaches will be presented in the fields of caries diagnosis, remineralization, preventive and therapeutic sealants, and antibacterial agents. The progresses of the European Minimum Intervention Advisory Board, of which presenter is founder and member, will be also discussed.

Restorative approaches and ageing population: are we always able to choose the right treatment

The elderly population represents one of the major challenges of modern dentistry. In fact, in addition to the increase in the average survival age, more and more elderly patients keep in time an efficient natural dentition, even thanks to the prevention policies implemented with increasing success in the last decades worldwide. However, it is essential to understand that the dentition of the elderly patient has biological and structural characteristics that can be very different from those of a younger subject, and which can heavily influence the success of a therapy. Moreover, numerous risk factors can influence the choice of a rehabilitative path, above all the presence of pharmacological therapies, manual disabilities or systemic pathologies. Undertaking restorative therapy in an elderly subject, whether it’s a simple direct restoration or a complex prosthetic rehabilitation, requires extreme care in the choice of materials, operational timing, and a wise use of modern digital technologies.

In this lecture, the most common restorative treatments required in the elderly population will be discussed, explaining;
(a) treatment options and possible difficulties,
(b) long term survival rates of different approaches,
(c) treatment of worn dentition, and,
d) resorting, where possible, to modern digital technologies to simplify time and costs even in the most complex cases.
