Clinical A/Prof Ramesh Balasubramaniam

A Specialist in Oral Medicine, Ramesh Balasubramaniam has numerous peer reviewed publications to his credit, as well as contributing to several chapters in various texts and co-edited two books. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals and is actively involved in teaching and research. He is president-elect of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia. Ramesh also has public appointments at the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and the Perth Children’s Hospital.

Temporomandibular disorders is a collective term for a group of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions which includes several clinical signs and symptoms involving the muscles of mastication, the temporomandibular joints, and associated structures. It is an enigmatic field of dentistry with a number of theories and philosophies on its aetiology, diagnosis and management. This lecture will explore current controversies in temporomandibular disorders and provide direction for evidence based clinical practice.

  • Recognise the difference between expert opinion and evidence-based treatments for temporomandibular disorders

  • Separate fact from fiction with regards to the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders
