Ozonated Water FAQs

Is there evidence that ozonated water will inactivate viruses?

Ozone can be dissolved in water to form ozonated water, or ‘aqueous ozone’. The aqueous form of ozone has been utilised as a potent disinfectant in water treatment, wastewater treatment, food and livestock industries, and as a commercial disinfectant. In these applications it inactivates viruses readily, including the small diameter viruses that are very difficult to inactivate.

Is ozonated water approved?

Ozone is approved under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for water treatment.

Water ozonator units (such as dosing taps) with antimicrobial claims will be listed on the ARTG.

Is there evidence that ozonated water will inactivate SARS-CoV-2?

Aqueous ozone can effectively inactivate this virus through disrupting the proteins and lipids of the SARS-CoV-2 virus spikes.

What ozone levels are needed in water to do this?

Ozone levels of 0.4 PPM have been shown to readily inactivate the virus. While antiviral actions occur at lower levels (0.1 ppm), 0.4 ppm is recommended as a suitable lower level given the short duration of mouth rinsing.

What is the relationship between PPM (parts per million) and mg/L?

1 PPM is the same as 1 mg/L.

How long after water is ozonated (e.g. in a dosing tap) can it still be used as an effective mouthrinse?

Ozone is unstable in the dissolved phase in water, and its stability is reduced by higher pH and higher temperature, and by the presence of metal ions. Stability is lower in municipal tap water than in water that has been deionised. As an example, in Brisbane tap water (which is moderately hard), the half-life is 8 minutes. Hence the freshly made ozonated water must be used immediately.

Can ozone levels in water be measured?

Yes, using test strips, methylene blue dye, ORP meters and commercial ozone meters. If the water flow rate through the ozone generator is reduced, the ozone level will rise in proportion, and vice versa. Halving the water flow will double the ozone level in water. This should be checked at the time of installation.

Can all water ozonators be installed into the plumbing of a dental practice?

Only devices that are WaterMark certified can be installed as attachments to existing plumbing in a reticulated water network. This certification ensures products are fit for purpose and appropriately authorised for use in plumbing installations connected to reticulated water systems.
