The ADA is working proactively on the potential shortage of gloves

27 November 2020

Malaysian glove manufacturer Top Glove has temporarily closed a significant number of plants after thousands of workers tested positive to COVID-19.

While a number of major suppliers have confirmed they do not source from this manufacturer and others are making every effort to resolve impacted supply lines, other suppliers have indicated they intend to impose limits on glove orders to ensure supply is maintained.

In response to this news the ADA has taken proactive measures to support dentists through any potential disruption, including:

  • Contacting the office of the Federal Health Minister to incite proactive action by the government

  • Encouraging suppliers to take meaningful steps to minimise potential disruption to the Australian market

  • Investigating the current stock levels of dental suppliers and working together understand the potential impact.

At this stage, the ADA recommends dentists take all reasonable steps to preserve glove stock with the ADA to provide some practical tips on conserving glove use here. Suppliers have indicated stock of Nitrile gloves is very limited and the recommendation is that dentists restrict use of this stock to practitioners, staff and patients who specifically require them.

Dentitst who find their usual supplier does not have the stock they require of latex or nitrile gloves can source alternate suppliers HERE
