Controversial documentary Root Cause taken down by Netflix.

1 March 2019

The decision by Netflix to remove the controversial Australian-produced documentary, Root Cause, from their library, follows international condemnation by dental associations including the American Association of Endodontists, the ADA, Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists and the Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry.

The film, which alleges root canal treatments are linked to numerous medical conditions, bases its message on outdated facts that have been shown over time by peer-reviewed scientific evidence to be incorrect with NO proven links existing between root canal treatment and disease elsewhere within the body.

In fact, endodontic treatment remains a critical component within oral health care as it acts to eliminate infection and pain, maintain root form and alveolar bone support, allowing both young and old to retain their natural teeth and improve their quality of life.

Likening the claims made in the film to “yelling fire in a crowded movie theatre”, Dr Mitchell Josephs D.D.S., writing in the Herald-Tribune, labelled Root Cause a “horrific, misleading ‘film’”, a sentiment shared by the wider international dental community.

Dental associations have written to Apple, Amazon and Vimeo asking them to also remove the film from their libraries.
