1. Position Summary
The ADA provides recommendations to assist its members to understand their obligations in providing
assessments, expert opinions and reports to third parties.
2. Position
2.1 Dentists undertaking assessments and providing expert opinions and reports for third parties should stay within their area of expertise, be unbiased and honest, and must be prepared without influence from the requesting party.
2.2 Dentists in providing assessments, expert opinions and reports to third parties must comply with the Board’s Code of Conduct.
2.3 Dentists should refer to the ADA recommendations on undertaking assessments and providing expert opinions and reports to third parties (Appendix 1) as well as other documents that may be relevant as notified to them.
2.4 Dentists should verify the current version of court practice rules is used when undertaking assessments and providing expert opinions and reports for third parties.
3. Background
3.1. Dentists undertaking assessments or expert reports beyond their professional expertise expose dentists to significant medicolegal risk.
3.2. The ADA assists its members to understand their obligations in providing assessments, expert opinions and reports to third parties.
3.3. Court practice rules are updated periodically.
